Uche Sparks Straightforward Crystal Palace Triumph at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning at a rapid pace. Without star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially after a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a largely rotated Palace outfit. The Londoners were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Established from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick move in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
