"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Several celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the ultimate compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to make music."

"So all is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The trio have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the award.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the pioneers that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Laughter

The album was born from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real time who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the outside opinions and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent confidence required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's candor fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the band will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still going strong."
